What was your motivation for studying abroad?
Studying abroad has been my biggest dream since starting college. I knew I wanted to do something that would challenge me in every way possible, and going abroad allowed me to do just that! Being forced to start from scratch has forced me to shift my perspective and grow into a better version of myself. I may not have known anyone coming into Portugal, but I’ve met some of the most incredible people. On top of that, I knew that I had the support system to ensure my success abroad. The Cisneros Institute has been my biggest supporter, and I couldn't be more thankful.
What was the most surprising thing you did or saw? Did you cross anything off your bucket list?
The biggest surprise so far has been the drinkable water. Strict water regulations mean that tap water in Portugal is completely safe to drink! I’ve witnessed multiple people refill their bottles using the bathroom sink, and it takes me by surprise every time. Though I’ve only been in Europe for three weeks, I was able to check England off my bucket list! In fact, I’m writing this from my friend’s dorm in central London right now! The close proximity is incredibly convenient and makes it easy to plan trips. I’ll even be visiting Germany next weekend!
What was the hardest adjustment you had to make?
Feeling way out of my depth, especially not speaking the local language. It’s a humbling experience, and I’m not sure I’ll ever get a handle on feeling like I’m way in over my head, but I’ve found myself growing accustomed to this feeling. Ensuring that I don’t let myself get overwhelmed was the first step to making sure I could function normally.
How would you describe study abroad in five words?
Enriching, transformative, exhilarating, humbling, and fun!
What advice would you give to other students/Cisneros Scholars thinking about studying abroad?
Take a chance on yourself! It’s scary and it’s new, but that’s what makes it so exciting! It may be rough at times — that’s par for the course — just be sure to give yourself some grace. One setback doesn’t dictate your experience. And if nothing else, know that everyone at the institute is rooting for you!
