As Associate Director of the Cisneros Hispanic Leadership Institute, Trey Johnston oversees the design and implementation of Latinx-centered leadership and development programming and manages the Institute's external partnerships. Trey also works with the Executive Director to define the Institute’s research priorities and policy-related efforts with the goal of elevating Latina/e/o/x voices in decision-making. Trey's current research applies critical theoretical approaches to evaluate and complicate the role of identities like race, gender, and disability in public administration and social services implementation. His other scholarship speaks to the representation of Latinos and the ways that language influences identity and well-being, particularly within higher education structures. Johnston received his M.A. from the George Washington University and is currently completing a Ph.D. in Public Policy & Public Administration at GW's Trachtenberg School. He the recipient of several fellowships, including a Fulbright.

For Cisneros Scholars and Fellows, Trey's door is always open for mentorship and a good discussion on identity, mental health, and/or navigating life and career plans. A product of movements between South America and the American South, Trey likes to make sure his Brazilian heritage is represented at the Institute (especially in his not-so-subtle office decor).
