Hey I’m Isis! I’m one of the Caminos al Futuro kids this year and I’m really excited to be spending the next couple of weeks here in D.C. at the George Washington University with all these really cool people!
Coming into this program, I was unsure about whether or not I was going to fit in with the rest of the group because I’m somewhat of an introverted person, but it was actually very easy to talk to everyone and we all become really close, really quickly. We are all inseparable and since day one we have had breakfast together, gone out to explore the city together, and even had late night conversations in the dorm rooms together. The last one is probably the most fun thing we all do together because after the very long and VERY hot days we’ve endured here in D.C. (nothing like the weather in Chicago), it’s super fun to just get into our pj’s and watch a movie or talk about random things until our strict 10:59room checks come around. I feel like I know more about these people than I do my own classmates and we’ve only been together for 3 days! In these little gatherings we have already talked about things like what our spirit colors are, our favorite bubble tea drinks, and if someone is insane for going on a 6 a.m. run in 90 degree weather. But my favorite was when we all decided to watch Coco together.
Yesterday, we were all talking about Disney movies on the bus ride home and were talking about how Coco was the best movie ever made and Bella brought up how she had never seen it before. We were all SHOCKED to say the least. So we decided that right when we got back we would go change into our pjs and watch the movie. A million years later, after everyone was finally ready, we started the movie and moved all the furniture to accommodate everyone in the room. Even though it was kinda very small and messed up the Feng Shui of the room, we were eventually able to make it work. After another million years, we started the movie and not even 5 minutes in everyone started complaining so we just turned it off and started talking about anything and everything. An hour later, we had all talked about our families, our goals, our favorite ice cream, the drama at school, our favorite music, and so much more. There was not a single moment when I wasn’t smiling or laughing. The energy in the room is always so high with these people and even after our classes and long walks around the VERY hot city, we are still as energetic as we were in the morning.
I’m really looking forward to spending the next 3 weeks with these kids because even though we may get on each others nerves, we’re like one big, dysfunctional family that has each other’s backs.
(And if you’re one of their parents, kudos to you for raising such caring and intelligent children!)
