Caminos al Futuro is a one-of-a-kind experience in every way. I applied to the program for a variety of reasons. Much to my amazement, the program has provided far more than I imagined and opened my eyes to a range of new ideas and experiences.

The opportunity to visit Washington, D.C. alone is incredible. The nation’s capital, with its bustling streets and revered monuments, has convinced me that I want to attend college near a city.

The academic components of Caminos al Futuro are also unparalleled. The chance to receive application advice from admissions officers and professors is invaluable as a junior aspiring to attend a prestigious university. Furthermore, I have treasured the cultural background classes because I learned many new concepts that will guide me throughout my career as a leader and someone who intends to make a difference by supporting marginalized communities.

However, I believe that the most important takeaway from Caminos al Futuro has been my interactions with the other 15 scholars. Despite only knowing my fellow participants for eight days, they are some of the closest friends I have made. Through trips, meals, documentaries, lectures, and difficult conversations, we have developed deep friendships. These connections have increased my sense of belonging and purpose, as well as boosted my overall happiness. Our shared ethnicity also provides a unique bond that will last beyond our time in D.C.

Caminos al Futuro is the opportunity of a lifetime. The aforementioned features distinguish it from other programs for one crucial reason: it is free. As the progeny of divorced parents from low-income families, being able to pursue my academic interests while receiving college application assistance is invaluable.  These experiences are typically only available to wealthy students with families that have the discretionary income to pay for tutors and private college coaches. The most significant reward I have received from Caminos al Futuro has been the lifelong camaraderie with other Latinx students, which will help me as I begin the college application process and beyond.
