LatinXpressions with Juan Manuel Aldape Muñoz: Moving Relations in Latinx/e Performance

The LatinXpressions Series is an initiative of the Cisneros Institute that aims to inspire the GW community through stimulating conversations with Latinx artists, authors, and musicians. At our upcoming event, we'll be joined by Dr. Juan Manuel Aldape Muñoz, who will reflect on the relationship between making and thinking through his choreography, writing, and current book project, Alien Choreographies: Dancing Beyond Citizenship. 

Juan Manuel Aldape Muñoz (Ph.D.) is a choreographer whose work has been presented internationally. When not creating work under DANZA/FUERZA, he’s devising with NAKA Dance Theater. In addition to choreographing and performing, he writes about performance’s role in transforming society and ideas of citizenship. His academic and public-facing essays have appeared or are forthcoming in Dance Research Journal, Performance Philosophy, Theatre Research International, In Dance, and loveDancemore, as well as performance anthologies. He’s currently completing his first book, Alien Choreographies: Dancing Beyond Citizenship. He edited and contributed to the book Dismantling: Dance, Space, and Memory in Tallahassee (2026), which was commissioned by the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography. He’s a 2026–2027 Career Enhancement Fellow with the Institute for Citizens & Scholars and the past managing director of San Francisco’s Festival of Latin American Contemporary Choreographers. He’s an assistant professor in the Department of Performing and Media Arts at Cornell University.
