Embracing New Beginnings

George Washington University tempietto

Written by Christopher Flores-Moreno, Cisneros Scholar '25

The echoes of Feliz Navidad have faded, Año Nuevo celebrations have settled, and the decorations started to come off the walls. Winter break is coming to an end. For us Revolutionaries, that means one thing: it’s time to conquer another semester at George Washington University. As I transition from the warmth of family gatherings, I take a moment to breathe in the crisp January air and embrace the new beginnings that await me this year!

The break allowed me to both acknowledge the whirlwind that was last semester, and enjoy the holidays. For many of us Latinx Revolutionaries, the holidays are where our Latinx heritage is brought to the table (literally). Now Foggy Bottom beckons, summoning me back to the dorms and lecture halls. While some might answer that call with a groan, I remember that returning to GWU isn’t just about exams and deadlines. It’s about reconnecting with your GW family, discovering secret study spots around campus, and cheering on our athletes (Go GW!). But let’s be honest, the transition back to academic life can be daunting. Here are some tips to ensure that my semester goes smoothly. I hope they help you too:

Mastering your schedule is key, especially at the start of the semester. Familiarize yourself with helpful organization tools such as planners, online calendars, and to-do lists. Break down projects into manageable chunks and schedule study breaks so that (you can still catch up on your favorite show. Remember, sleep is not negotiable! Fuel your mind and body for those late-night Gelman sessions.

Find what you’re most comfortable with and what allows you to be productive, whether it’s solo study or a productive group huddle. Experiment with different study techniques - flashcards, mind maps, practice problems - and don’t be afraid to ask your professors or TAs for help, that’s what office hours are for! Don’t forget to visit Gelman’s Writing Center and tutoring services. Join clubs, attend campus events, and explore everything the District has to offer. Don’t neglect your personal well-being, take mental health breaks, exercise, and prioritize good sleep (no 3am TikToks!). Remember, you have to stay healthy to thrive as a scholar.

Good luck to all students on their spring semester! See you on campus, Revolutionaries!
