Civil Engineer Student Pen and Paper

Written by Georgette Encinas, Cisneros Scholar '25

Before stepping foot on George Washington University’s campus as a civil engineering major, my mind was filled with apprehensions. As a first-generation college student and a woman entering a field historically dominated by men, I anticipated challenges not just in mastering the coursework but also in finding my place within the engineering community. However, the reality of my experience at GW has been strikingly different and positive, thanks to the unparalleled support network around me.

The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers (SHPE) and the Cisneros Institute are at the core of my support network. SHPE and Cisneros have provided me with invaluable resources, like networking and mentorship, enabling me to sharpen my skills and prepare for a successful career. Beyond that, these communities have offered a space to explore my identity, celebrate my heritage, and connect with peers with similar backgrounds and experiences.

It was especially reassuring to find that women are the majority in GW’s civil engineering program. Our major may be small, but the bonds we have formed are strong and enduring. Together, we have navigated a rigorous coursework, shared in each other’s successes, and provided comfort during challenging times. These relationships have transformed my classmates into a family that is a constant source of support and encouragement. I discovered a vibrant community where women didn't just exist but thrived and led within my major.

To anyone embarking on a similar academic path, know that you are not alone. There is a community within GW that is ready to support, uplift, and celebrate your achievements. Together, we are breaking stereotypes and building a future where diversity in engineering is not just an aspiration but a reality.
