Apply to the Caminos al Futuro Program

Caminos al Futuro is a fully-funded, selective pre-college summer program for rising seniors in U.S. high schools offered by the Cisneros Hispanic Leadership Institute at the George Washington University in Washington D.C.

During the 3-week intensive program, Caminos scholars examine the social, economic, and political transformations affecting the Hispanic/Latino community. Through lectures by university professors and expert leaders in their fields, scholars not only learn about pressing contemporary issues, but also create their own project to bring change in their own communities.

Students who successfully complete Caminos al Futuro and are admitted to GW will receive consideration as Cisneros Scholars.

The program is fully-funded, including all fees, room and board, transportation to and from the program, materials, and program-related activities. Participants should plan accordingly for discretionary spending such as personal items, laundry, and access to university health services (approximate $25 per visit), if needed.


Application Details

In the Program Information section of the application, you must first select the "3-Week College Intensive" option, then choose "Caminos Al Futuro" from the options under course choices. The $50 fee will be waived for all Caminos al Futuro applicants.

2. The application will lead you through all sections, which include:

  • Personal information and session/program selection
  • Educational information, including an academic transcript (please include fall term grades)
  • Three (3) short essay responses (additionally, we ask that you incorporate any personal information, such as financial need or if you are the first in your family to attend college, in your essays if you wish for it to be considered in your application). Examples from past years include:
  1. At the Cisneros Hispanic Leadership Institute, we believe that leadership takes many forms - service, advocacy, involvement in student organizations, etc. How have you demonstrated commitment to the Hispanic/Latinx community as a leader? What inspires you to lead? (400 words maximum)
  2. The Cisneros Institute created a time travel machine and we took you to the year 2025 to meet your future self. Describe the version of you that you meet. What was the path that got "future you" there? What barriers did you have to face along the way and how did you confront them? (400 words max)
  3. What do you hope to gain from Caminos al Futuro? (250 words max)
  • Recommendation from teacher or guidance counselor (you will need to enter their name, email, and organization/institution)

3. Applications will be reviewed beginning March 1st, 2019. Space is limited.

4. Once your application has been reviewed, you will receive an email informing you of the decision.
