Caminos al Futuro is a fully-funded summer scholarship program that engages high-achieving juniors (rising seniors) from U.S. high schools in a residential academic leadership development program at the George Washington University. 

This program seeks to cultivate leadership potential and scholarship in rising seniors who desire to shape issues impacting Hispanic and Latinx communities. Caminos al Futuro scholars will get a chance to examine the political, economic and social transformations impacting Hispanic and Latinx communities nationwide by:

  • Conducting research, ­­­­­­content, and media analyses
  • Engaging in collaborative projects
  • Engaging with leaders who help Hispanic and Latinx communities in the United States
  • Attending site visits and performing community service

Outcomes

  1. Leadership development and in-field activities with an intensive course focused on leadership across disciplines
  2. Connections and networking with GW faculty, students, leaders and policymakers and access to the intellectual, government and international resources of the nation’s capital
  3. Expanded opportunities for community-based involvement through service learning
  4. An understanding of the college experience, career options, and strategies necessary for success at selective universities
  5. Enhanced critical thinking, public speaking, persuasive writing, and advocacy skills
  6. Three undergraduate credits, paid course and program-related activities, room, board, roundtrip airfare to Washington, D.C. and materials
  7. Priority consideration for a Cisneros scholarship if admitted to GW

Participants should plan accordingly for discretionary spending such as personal items, laundry, and access to university health services (approximate $25 per visit), if needed.

Application Details

In the Program Information section of the application, you must first select the "3-Week College Intensive" option, then choose "Caminos Al Futuro" from the options under course choices. The $50 fee will be waived for all Caminos al Futuro applicants.

1. On the application, fill in the fields with the following information

2. The application will lead you through all sections, which include:

  • Personal information and session/program selection
  • Educational information, including an academic transcript (please include fall term grades)
  • Three (3) essays addressing the following prompts (additionally, we ask that you incorporate any personal information, such as financial need or if you are the first in your family to attend college, in your essays if you wish for it to be considered in your application):
    1. Please describe what leadership means to you. How have you demonstrated initiative in the Hispanic/Latinx community (e.g., service, advocacy, student organizations, etc.)? Why is this leadership role/initiative important to you? (400 words maximum)
    2. What do you hope to gain from the Caminos al Futuro program to help advance your short-term and/or long-term goals? (250 words max)
    3. Please describe your post-high school plans. What barriers could prevent you from achieving your goals? How will you overcome those barriers? (350 words max)
  • Recommendation from teacher or guidance counselor (you will need to enter their name, email, and organization/institution)

3. Applications will be reviewed beginning March 1st, 2018. Space is limited.

4. Once your application has been reviewed, you will receive an email informing you of the decision.
